Sundara Kandam begins with Hanuman's departure from Kishkindha, where he was sent by Rama and Sugriva as a messenger to Sita. He meets various obstacles and challenges on his way, such as Mainaka mountain, Surasa the serpent, Simhika the demoness, and Lankini the guardian of Lanka. He overcomes them all with his courage, intelligence, and devotion.
He enters Lanka at night and searches for Sita in every palace and garden. He finally finds her in Ashoka Vana, where she was held captive by Ravana. He reveals himself to her as Rama's envoy and gives her Rama's ring as a token. He also conveys Rama's message of love and assurance to her.
He then creates havoc in Lanka by setting fire to many buildings and killing many demons. He confronts Ravana in his court and warns him of Rama's wrath. He escapes from Ravana's trap of Brahmastra by enlarging his body and breaking free. He returns to Rama with Sita's jewel as a proof of her well-being.
Sundara Kandam ends with Rama's joy at hearing Hanuman's report and his preparation for the war against Ravana. He builds a bridge across the ocean with the help of Nala and other monkeys. He crosses over to Lanka with his army and engages in a fierce battle with Ravana and his allies.
Who is the Author of Sundara Kandam?
The author of Sundara Kandam is Valmiki, who is also the author of the entire Ramayana. Valmiki is regarded as the first poet (adi kavi) and the first sage (adi rishi) in Hindu tradition. He lived in ancient India, around the 5th century BCE or earlier.
According to legend, Valmiki was originally a robber named Ratnakara, who lived by looting travelers in the forest. One day, he met Narada Muni, a divine sage who sang the glories of Lord Vishnu. Narada asked Ratnakara why he was committing such sins and who would share his karma. Ratnakara realized that his family would not share his sins and decided to renounce his evil ways.
Narada taught him the mantra \"Rama\" and asked him to meditate on it. Ratnakara sat in meditation for many years, until he was covered by an anthill (valmika). He emerged from it as a transformed person, with divine vision and poetic skill. He was then named Valmiki by Narada.
Valmiki composed the Ramayana as an epic poem based on the life story of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He taught it to his disciples Lava and Kusha, who were also Rama's sons. They recited it before Rama and Sita in Ayodhya, where they were reunited after a long separation.
